Pandemic Hope: A Motorcycle Journey’s Timeless Tale for Humanity

Helmet time on a solo motorcycle journey gives pause for plenty of self-reflection. Now imagine that same self-reflection knowing you are dying. That’s what happened to Heather Ellis. Heather was given a death date and fighting for her life, she rode her motorcycle following the fabled silk road from London to Australia. Jailed within the cell walls of her helmet, her mind raced knowing her impending fate. Yet even with an HIV positive diagnosis in the early 1990s and without any known treatments, she never gave up hope. Her book Timeless on the Silk Road gives you her first hand account of what that was like.

Heather’s motorcycle journey with lived experience being HIV positive offers us a perspective of hope and optimism as the world goes through the COVID-19 pandemic. Like her work within the HIV community, Heather has witnessed that “…people are becoming very united, working close together and working close together as a community” in dealing with the coronavirus. Crisis really can bring about the best in humanity.

On Episode 7 of Bedtime Stories with The Motelorcyclist, Heather shares her story and the inspiration for writing Timeless on the Silk Road. She also talks about her work in support of U = U (undetectable equals untransmittable) an initiative to end the dual epidemics of HIV and HIV related stigma and how she is inspired to continue writing.
